Alan Shearer believes that Martin Odegaard looks to be getting back to his best as his performance during Arsenal’s win over Brighton was his best of the season.
The Arsenal captain scored the opening goal of the game against the Seagulls as he set the Gunners on their way to a 2-1 win.
Who was your Arsenal Man of the Match after 2-1 win against Brighton?
Mikel Arteta’s team looked set to cruise to victory at the Emirates Stadium; however, in the second 45 minutes, they made hard work of proceedings.
David Raya produced one of the best saves of the season to ensure that the North London club left with all three points.
But fortuitously, Odegaard also stepped up in the first half to produce his best display of the season, just when Arsenal needed him.
Martin Odegaard had his best game of the season vs Brighton
Alan Shearer was in no doubt that Martin Odegaard had his best game of the season against Brighton.
The Newcastle United legend was so impressed by the Norwegian international’s goal, which was a sumptuous strike from outside the penalty area.
Speaking about the match, Shearer told The Rest Is Football: “Gabriel came back yesterday, he came on,” to which Lineker replied, “That will be a real bonus for them!”
“I thought Odegaard had his best game of the season! I thought he scored a really good goal and looked good on the ball,” added the former Premier League striker.
After the win, Odegaard says he’s been working hard on his shooting in training, and it paid off against Brighton with his superb strike.
Fill in the blank: Mikel Arteta should start ______________ in the number ten role vs Aston Villa…
Eze or Odegaard?
Meanwhile, Shearer was also impressed by Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard on the wings, although he did question some of the Gunners’ finishing.
He added: “Saka was dangerous, Trossard was also. Gyokeres had a couple of chances. Martinelli came on and missed a big opportunity, which would have eased the stress for them.
“But yeah, I thought they deserved it in the end, but they had to rely on that incredible save.”
Arsenal really should have been out of sight well before Brighton worked their way back into the game, with Arteta’s side managing 24 shots and an xG of 3.08.
Eberechi Eze should be worried by Martin Odegaard’s performance
One player who won’t have enjoyed Odegaard’s display quite as much will have been Eberechi Eze, who is struggling to find his place in the team.
For the first time since April 2022, Eze has remained an unused sub in back-to-back matches, suggesting Arteta does not quite trust him right now.
The 27-year-old certainly can’t be starting over Gabriel Martinelli or Trossard at left wing, and now, he looks to be falling behind Odegaard.
Eze must quickly find his feet again in North London or risk losing his place for club and country, given how strong the competition is in both squads.
