Andrea Berta is set to become a lot more influential in terms of Arsenal’s academy, with the new Head of Academy set to work closely with the Italian director.

Since he arrived at the Emirates Stadium back in March 2025, Berta has continued Arsenal’s transformation as sporting director.

The former Atletico Madrid man made several impressive additions over the summer, which have continued to elevate performances on the pitch.

Now, the 54-year-old has taken on the role of being more hands-on with the academy to ensure the North London club are maximising that area.

Andrea Berta takes new academy role at Arsenal

Arsenal are hoping to improve the club’s academy and have tasked Andrea Berta with overseeing that side of the club, according to Tom Canton.

Back in January, Per Mertesacker departed Arsenal as Head of Academy, and the Gunners are looking to replace the German.

Whoever is next after Mertesacker will have to report to Berta, with the club keen to increase revenue through player sales.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Canton said: “But it seems Andrea Berta’s sphere of influence, if you like, is broadening a lot more, and he’s going to get a lot more involved with the academy side of things.

Could this be Arsenal’s starting XI in 10 years?

“The new head of academy that will replace Per Mertesacker when he leaves at the end of the season will report, it seems, straight into Andrea Berta.

“Because there’s a real focus, I think, on that side of Arsenal’s recruitment to improve the academy and potential sales as well at the club in the future too.”

Arsenal U-21 are struggling this season

Arsenal U-21 have endured a poor season, with the young Gunners currently sitting 10th in the Premier League 2.

The U-21 exited the EFL Trophy in the group stage after losing two of their three matches in the competition.

There was also disappointment in the UEFA Youth League this term, as the U-19 team finished 33rd in the table.

The Gunners lost five of their six matches on the continent, with Max Dowman having carried them to their only win against Bayern Munich.

There is plenty of work to be done on the academy and it is no wonder the club have assigned Berta to change its fortunes.
