Arsenal ace Takehiro Tomiyasu got question about the Invincibles embarrassingly wrong

Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu recently got one question about the club’s history embarrassingly wrong.

On this day 20 years ago, Arsenal completed a Premier League season unbeaten.

That famous Arsenal side became known as the Invincibles, and their achievement represents the greatest feat in the North London club’s history.

Iconic former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has now explained why he was so convinced that an undefeated campaign was even possible in the first place.

The French coach had an incredible squad at his disposal then, featuring a plethora of Arsenal icons, including the likes of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Dennis Bergkamp, and Robert Pires, amongst others.

Takehiro Tomiyasu is now part of the current Arsenal squad that are aiming to win the club’s first Premier League title since the Invincibles managed it. Mikel Arteta’s side are still in with a chance of being crowned champions this Sunday when they will contest their final match of the season against Everton. If Manchester City drop points against West Ham United, then the Gunners will have a chance of winning the title.

Takehiro Tomiyasu demonstrates lack of Arsenal history knowledge

It could easily be assumed that every member of the current Arsenal squad knows a fair amount about the Invincibles and what they achieved.

However, in a recent quiz with STATSports, Tomiyasu admitted: “I don’t know about football.”

The Japanese defender was then asked to name five members of the Invincibles squad. Tomiyasu named Henry, and then suggested Ian Wright, who left the club in 1998, six years before the Invincibles’ sealed their triumph.

The full-back could not offer any further names, to the amusement of Oleksandr Zinchenko and Mohamed Elneny, who were also taking part in the quiz and had been able to answer the same question successfully.

Mikel Arteta now aiming to make more history with Arsenal

Whilst Tomiyasu clearly doesn’t know a great deal about Arsenal’s history, he will be hoping that he can be part of a side that writes its own chapter this weekend. It will be a monumental triumph if the Gunners can beat Manchester City to the Premier League crown on Sunday.

However, even if the North London club don’t come out on top this season, they have still made huge progress. Arsenal have already made history this season by recording 27 Premier League wins for the very first time. Even the Invincibles only managed 26.
