Arsenal view Arthur Vermeeren as a potential replacement for Thomas Partey.

According to transfer journalist Dean Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport, Arsenal have “got their eye on” Royal Antwerp midfielder Arthur Vermeeren, who is considered “one of the breakthrough players of his generation.”

Mikel Arteta is apparently planning for life without Thomas Partey at the Emirates Stadium. If that is indeed the case it is a wise move on the Spanish coach’s part. The time has come for Arsenal to move on from Partey. His fitness issues mean that he simply cannot be relied upon to be available when he is needed most.

Whether Vermeeren is anywhere near ready to step into the Ghanaian’s boots is another matter. The once-capped Belgium international is only 18-years-old and has never played club football outside of his homeland.

Vermeeren has made a bright start to his career, and has heaps of potential, but it would be a big ask for him to take on a significant role at the north London club at this stage in his career.

Arsenal need more than Arthur Vermeeren

If Arsenal sporting director Edu can tempt the teenager to the club for a fair price, leaving enough funds left over to be invested in a more experienced and proven midfield option as well, then that would be the smartest course of action.

Jones also stated that Arsenal are seeking a midfielder who can give Declan Rice more freedom in the middle of park. Arteta has already shown, by fielding Jorginho behind Rice in a few matches this season, that he is keen to get the former West Ham man in more advanced areas.

The 24-year-old is certainly good enough to have an impact in the final third. However, his best position does seem to be just ahead of the defence, protecting the Gunners’ rearguard. It surely makes sense to use Rice in his best position. Perhaps Vermeeren is the key to unlocking the best of Rice further up the pitch.
