Viktor Gyokeres’ Sweden side suffered a miserable Saturday evening in Houston as the Netherlands ran riot.
Inspired by Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo, the Dutch simply had too much for Graham Potter’s side and found themselves four goals to the good before the hour mark.
For Sweden, it was a frustrating game and after finishing the first half well, they threw everything away early in the second period.
As for Arsenal man Gyokeres, he huffed and puffed and was one of the better players for Sweden despite not getting on the scoresheet when it mattered.
Gyokeres cut a frustrated figure and was denied a stunning assist when Yasin Ayari miscontrolled a stunning cross from the Arsenal man.
Indeed, over on social media, Arsenal fans couldn’t help but feel sorry for their big number 14.

Arsenal fans react to Viktor Gyokeres’ performance for Sweden v Holland
There was an element of feeling sorry for Gyokeres at times. Holland going 4-0 up just after half-time felt a bit harsh as in main, Gyokeres looked good.
Indeed, fans on social media picked up on just that as they felt Gyokeres was effectively being let down.
‘Feel sorry for Gyokeres and Isak, they’re too good for this rubbish’ one fan wrote, while another wrote ‘Gyokeres doing everything possible to win but they’re letting him down’.
Gyokeres’ overall play was eye-catching and the cross to Ayari was a stunner.
“That weak foot cross from Gyokeres was outrageous. Deserved an assist for that delivery’ another fan wrote.
While another simply suggested that ‘Gyokeres is playing for the wrong team’.

Interestingly, another fan pointed out how different the striker seemed to be for Sweden than he is for Arsenal.
“Am I the only one noticing that Gyokeres’ movements and runs for Sweden are different from the way he plays for Arsenal? He’s way more sharper and direct. I guess it’s because of the shape and having to play alongside Isak too has to be a factor.”
This felt like a game where Sweden and Gyokeres perhaps deserved more.
But with a win already on the board and a game against Tunisia to come, it does feel like we’ll see more of the Arsenal man and Sweden.
Once in the knockouts, then you simply never know how far they might go.
