Arsenal fans have had their say on Dennis Bergkamp potentially returning to the club.

As reported by Football Transfers, Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp has now been offered a role at the club by Mikel Arteta.

The manager wants the iconic former forward to return to the north London club to work in the Hale End academy setup. Arteta is said to have extended a “personal invitation” to the Dutchman.

Bergkamp is still a revered figure at the Emirates Stadium, and has been immortalised in statue-form outside the ground. He is undoubtedly one of the best players ever to have worn the famous red and white.

Bergkamp arrived at Arsenal in the summer of 1995. Over the course of the subsequent eleven seasons, he racked up 423 appearances for Arsenal and scored 120 goals. As a key part of some of Arsene Wenger’s best sides, he won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups, amongst other honours. Bergkamp was also, of course, a member of the ‘Invincibles’ squad.

A rare blend of craft, guile, speed, power, and elegance, the 79-cap Netherlands international was a beguiling player to watch. At his best, he was capable of spotting and pulling off passes that few other players could replicate.

If Bergkamp were to return to Arsenal now, there is a vast amount that the club’s most talented young prospects could learn from the 54-year-old. It would also be an excellent opportunity for him to build on his own coaching experiences, as he has previously held roles at Ajax and with the Netherlands B team.

Arsenal fans welcome prospect of Dennis Bergkamp return

Plenty of Arsenal fans would certainly love to see Bergkamp accept Arteta’s offer and return to Arsenal. Taking to X, one supporter embraced the prospect, saying, “I think I speak for everyone when I say we hope he accepts to join us.”

Another said, “living legend, bring him home.” Another dubbed him “the best player ever.”

Considering what he might bring to the academy system, one fan claimed, “this would be amazing, he’d bring so much knowledge to the youth at Arsenal.” Another suggested that “having a legend of the game to coach your development as a youth footballer can never be overemphasized. A really welcome development to the arsenal youth set up.” Another fan insisted that “the academy will only prosper and improve under the guidance of an Invincible.”

Bergkamp would not be the only former Arsenal star to take up a current role at the club. Beyond Arteta, Edu is the Gunners’ sporting director, Per Mertesacker is the head of the academy, and Jack Wilshere coaches the under-18s.
