Arsenal suffered a damaging defeat to Newcastle in the early kick-off on Saturday, but the mood around the club has been significantly lifted after the afternoon games.

Manchester City could have gone eight points clear of Arsenal, a gap which may have been too big to close in the Premier League title race.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side were beaten at Bournemouth, with Andoni Iraola’s side recording another victory at the Vitality Stadium after Mikel Arteta’s team fell to defeat there in October.

The defeat was a landmark one for Man City, and a significant one for Arsenal, both for the Premier League title race, and in the context of the club’s wider history.

Arsenal retain Invincibles record after Man City defeat

The Arsenal Invincibles are the only team to go an entire Premier League season undefeated, and their record of 49 games without a loss still stands over 20 years later.

Man City were threatening that record, as they started the day having not lost in 33 games, with their last league defeat coming away at Aston Villa in December last year.

However, Bournemouth’s superb victory now means that City cannot chase that record down. They have been dealt a blow in the title race, whilst Arsenal get to celebrate “Invincibles Day” for another year.

Arsenal fans react to Man City defeat

Arsenal fans have seen their spirits lifted after the loss to Newcastle, and have now taken to X to express their delight at Man City’s loss.

“Only positive from today is that Man City lost. Happy Invincibles Day!” A fan posted.

“With City’s loss today, the Invincibles record is safe for another season,” another fan highlighted.

“Crazy nobody can be invincibles again, for such a simple feat it’s mad how many teams can’t replicate it,” one fan pointed out.

Fans have also encouraged others to stay calm over their title chances, with City’s defeat showing that there is a long way to go in the campaign.

“Man City lost. Omg other teams drop points in a 38-game season shock horror who would have thought. Arsenal won 16 games from 18 literally THIS year. No team capable of such massive runs is out of a title race in November. Get a grip,” a fan posted.

Arsenal are currently five points behind Man City, and this is gap which can be closed. Had City won, fans may have been less optimistic about their title chances.
