Arsenal are edging closer to agreeing new terms with Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that Takehiro Tomiyasu is set to sign a new long-term contract with Arsenal.

The Japanese defender made his return to action for the north London club on Sunday after an injury lay-off, coming on against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

When he has been fit this season, the 25-year-old has generally impressed. At times, many Arsenal fans have even called for him to be given more regular game time, ahead of Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back, who has his flaws as a defender.

Tomiyasu is a useful player for Mikel Arteta to have at his disposal due to his versatility. The £19.8 million former Bologna man can play anywhere across the backline and is comfortable passing the ball off either foot.

However, his injury record is a problem. Since his arrival at the Emirates Stadium in 2021, Tomiyasu has missed plenty of football. This has prevented him from ever establishing himself as a nailed-on starter.

These persistent fitness issues have led to concerns amongst the Arsenal fanbase over the prospect of the player penning a new deal with the club.

Arsenal fans react to potential Takehiro Tomiyasu contract

Plenty of Arsenal supporters took to X to express their views on Romano’s report. One fan said, “I’ll be the first to say it……No! Injury record is abhorrent and it will most definitely bite us in the ass.” Another chipped in with, “I love the player, but I really think handing Tomiyasu a new contract is repeating some of the mistakes we’ve made over the last 18 months with our squad. Been injured every season he’s been here. Move on in the summer and replace in the squad.”

Plenty of fans agreed with this sentiment. One stated that Tomiyasu “should be allowed to leave” due to being so “injury prone.” Another fan suggested, “How about we watch Tomiyasu fitness till the end of the season before giving him a new long contract?”

One supporter suggested that the club are taking this action to “I guess protecting is value cos I lost faith him him, not reliable when u need him the most.”

Many other fans may well feel that Tomiyasu is worth persisting with, given his obvious quality when fit. It can’t be denied, though, that tying him down to a new long-term deal certainly carries with it a fair degree of risk.
