Many Arsenal fans are excited by the prospect of Martin Zubimendi joining the club.

Arsenal have been linked with a move for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

The Gunners’ sporting director Edu is thought to be willing to trigger the 24-year-old’s £52 million release clause in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The north London club certainly need to strengthen in that part of the pitch. Thomas Partey is too injury-prone to be relied upon. Arsenal are actively seeking to move Mohamed Elneny on now, before his contract expires at the end of the current campaign. Jorginho also faces an uncertain future, as the veteran midfielder is due to become a free agent this summer, and talks over a new contract with the Gunners have reached a “standstill.”

If that trio of players are to depart, or even just a couple of them, then major additions will need to be made in the middle of the park, as Arsenal cannot go into a new season with only Declan Rice to call upon in that position.

Zubimendi will be an attractive option to Mikel Arteta, as he can operate at both the base of the midfield, and in one of the more advanced No. 8 roles that his tactical setup utilises. This means that the Spanish coach could regularly get both Rice and Zubimendi on the pitch at the same time.

The 4-cap Spain international would bring additional silk and steel to the Arsenal midfield. He is extremely technically gifted, and an excellent passer of the ball, qualities which he marries with reliable defensive positioning and an impressive work rate.
