Rumours are swirling about the future of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

Barcelona are thought to want Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta to become their new manager, after Xavi recently announced that he would be vacating the Camp Nou hot seat at the end of the current season.

Arteta’s current contract with the north London outfit is due to expire in 18-months time. Arsenal are keen to keep him at the Emirates Stadium for longer, and the Spanish coach was thought to be keen to extend his stay, too. For that reason, talks over a new deal were put on hold whilst full focus was turned towards the January transfer window.

Then, the news broke in Barcelona of Xavi’s impending exit. Surely, the Arsenal hierarchy will now fast-track the manager’s new deal.

Spanish publication Sport have recently reported that Arteta intends to leave Arsenal at the end of the season in order to take the reins at Barcelona.

It is easy to see why such a move may appeal to the former midfielder. Not only are Barcelona one of the biggest and most successful clubs in world football, but he also has a personal connection with the Spanish giants.

Arteta came through the club’s iconic La Masia academy system as a youth player. However, he never made a senior appearance for Barcelona before moving on to PSG. He may well feel that he has a point to prove at the La Liga outfit.

Mikel Arteta plan revealed

Many Arsenal fans may now be panicking due to a fear that Arteta’s days at the Emirates Stadium are now numbered.

However, journalist Guillem Balague has now sent a message to any such anxious supporters.

Reporting on X, he said, “Arsenal fans can relax. Mikel Arteta not only didn’t have a chat with his staff about leaving at the end of the season, he has no intention to leave either. None of that is true. The club denies there was any meeting regarding leaving the club. Mikel is building something special at #AFC and has lots more to do.”

It would be a disaster for Arsenal if Arteta were to leave at this time. The 41-year-old has built a talented young squad in his image, and has made the Gunners genuine Premier League title contenders once again, as well as securing the club’s return to the Champions League.

The club also stuck by Arteta when things weren’t going so well for him earlier on in his managerial career. The club may well feel that the coach owes them his allegiance now, too. Arteta needs to stay at Arsenal and finish what he started. He needs to deliver some major silverware at the club.

Undoubtedly, he will move on at some point, but this summer should not be that time.
