Arsenal fans say PL title bid is ‘doomed’ after hearing latest transfer rumour

Arsenal fans have now had their say on the prospect of the club signing Leonardo Spinazzola this month.

Arsenal have recently been linked with a January move for Roma left-back Leonardo Spinazzola.

The 30-year-old’s current contract with the Italian capital club is set to expire at the end of this season. There has been no sign that the defender is willing to pen a new deal with the club. Therefore, Roma may well be willing to let the player go in a cut-price deal this month rather than allow him depart as a free agent in the summer.

On the surface, this represents the kind of deal that the north London club have recently moved away from striking. Since bringing Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares to the club in similar circumstances in the January of 2020, and seeing both players fail to make a particularly positive impression at the Emirates Stadium, the club have generally invested in younger players. The notable exception was the capture of Jorginho last January, who has proven himself to be a useful squad member.

On the other hand, though, bringing in Spinazzola would meet the requirements of Arsenal’s January priority. According to transfer journalist David Ornstein, finding an inexpensive left-back is top of the agenda for Arsenal and Mikel Arteta in this transfer window.

At his best, Spinazzola is a quality player who can defend solidly and provide a real attacking threat at the other end of the pitch. However, he has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, and is likely coming towards the end of what could be considered his peak years.

Plenty of Arsenal fans have reservations about the 24-cap Italy international being brought to the club. Taking to X, one supporter referred to the player as “Another 30 year old that we won’t be able to offload and hinder our books. This club is a shambles if we sign him.”

Another fan said, “He is a solid player but his age might be an issue.” Referencing Spinazzola’s fitness record, one fan stated, “That’s a proper player ruined by injury.”

Considering Arsenal have title-winning ambitions this season, one supporter views this deal as particularly uninspiring, claiming that “it’s bad if we’re looking at players like this that’s means we’re doomed this window.” Another fan took a similarly dim view, pointing out that “Even Roma don’t want him but Arteta wants him to lead us to the UCL/PL double.”
