Arsenal fans take aim at club legend Lee Dixon over ‘bizarre’ Bukayo Saka treatment

Many Arsenal fans have now taken a swipe at Lee Dixon after the former defender’s latest comments about Bukayo Saka.

Lee Dixon is an Arsenal legend.

In his playing days as a right-back, he made more than 600 appearances for the North London club between 1988 and 2002.

Over the course of his lengthy career with the Gunners, Dixon won four league titles, three FA Cups, and the 1994 European Cup Winners’ Cup.

However, despite his legacy with the club being assured, the 60-year-old has still managed to provoke the ire of Arsenal supporters.

The 22-cap former England international was commentating on the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 group stage clash with Slovenia last night. Gareth Southgate’s side once again disappointed as they were held to a turgid 0-0 draw in Cologne.

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka started that match, and tried to make an impact. However, the 22-year-old was unable to deliver a decisive moment. Despite this, Arsenal fans still believe that Saka has been one of his country’s best players in the competition so far, albeit that is a low bar to clear.

However, Dixon was more critical of Saka, and was seemingly pleased to see the Hale End academy graduate taken off with 20 minutes to go, to be replaced by Chelsea ace Cole Palmer.

Arsenal fans rush to defence of Bukayo Saka after Lee Dixon criticism

In response to Dixon’s commentary on Saka’s performance for England v Slovenia, plenty of Arsenal fans took to X to speak up on behalf of the attacker.

One supporter said: “He was sooooo desperate to prove that Saka needed to come off for Palmer. Absolutely nothing changed but he had to convince himself he was right… bizarre commentary all day. I have officially disowned Lee Dixon.”

Another outraged fan stated: “Bukayo has been one of our best players so far and all I hear is Lee Dixon having snidey digs at him.”

One other added: “Notice how overly complimentary Lee Dixon has been towards Foden & Palmer? Both of whom are City academy graduates? But super harsh on Saka despite the fact that the kid plays for the club Dixon played much of his career for too? These ex Arsenal legends are embarrassing.”

One fan chipped in with: “Lee Dixon is awful. It’s so jarring listening to him praise other players for the bare minimum yet never give Saka any credit for his efforts.”

Another asked: “You’d never believe Lee Dixon was a former Arsenal player, the way he constantly berates Saka unfairly. What is his issue?!”

Does Arsenal ace Saka get unfair treatment?

Saka has been far from the worst performer for England at Euro 2024 so far. Despite scoring in the nation’s opening game, Jude Bellingham has fallen far short of expectations, Phil Foden has largely disappointed, Harry Kane has been largely anonymous, and even Declan Rice has looked subdued.

Despite this, Wayne Rooney believes Saka is in danger of losing his England starting spot. It would be incredibly harsh if Southgate were to decide to bench the Arsenal man.

On top of that, Arsenal teammate Rice has called upon the English press to show greater support for Saka, as Southgate’s attacking contingent has come under fire in recent days.
