Arsenal icon Aaron Ramsey found his best form at the club whilst playing alongside Mikel Arteta, and he has now praised the Spaniard.

Ramsey became a club icon during his 11-year spell at the Emirates, joining as a promising teenager from Cardiff before scoring the winner in two FA Cup finals.

The midfielder would go on to make 369 appearances for the club, scoring 64 and assisting 66 times, and he was one of the more popular figures at Arsenal during the final few years of Arsene Wenger’s reign.

Ramsey has now praised his former teammate and captain Arteta for what he has done since becoming Arsenal manager in 2019.

Speaking to JustArsenal, Ramsey was asked whether he believed his old club could go on to win the Premier League title this season after just falling short last year, and he admitted that he wants his former midfield partner to lift the trophy in May.

“I think Mikel has done an incredible job and obviously built a team that is able to compete with the best,” he stated of the Spaniard.

“They came close last year, hopefully this year they’ll take it a step further.”

Ramsey recovered from a broken leg to return to playing in 2012, but he initially struggled to find his best form, and he received criticism from the Arsenal fanbase for his performances.

However, everything changed for him in 2013. He moved to a central midfield role, alongside Arteta in a pivot behind star summer signing Mesut Ozil, and it all began to click for him.

Arsenal raced to the top of the league at the start of the 2013-14 season, and Ramsey was sensational, notching up 10 goals and nine assists in 23 Premier League games overall in the campaign.

A significant injury halted both his and Arsenal’s progress midway through the season, but he recovered to then help carry Arsenal to their first major trophy in nine years with his winner against Hull City in the FA Cup final.

Ramsey and Arteta formed a well-balanced midfield pivot, with Ramsey making late runs into the box to finish, whilst Arteta sat back and dictated the game with his passing, and Arsenal could have gone on to win the title if the Welshman had stayed fit throughout the campaign.

He now hopes that this current Arsenal side can do what his one failed to in the Premier League, but with back-to-back losses to end 2023, title hopes now appear to be quickly fading.
