Arsenal’s North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur have been the surprise package in this summer’s transfer window.

After finishing 17th in the Premier League in back-to-back seasons, Spurs have decided to spend a fortune on new signings.

One of their big acquisitions has been Mateus Fernandes from relegated West Ham United for a whopping £85 million.

Troy Deeney is perplexed by that fee after hearing who Arsenal are trying to sign for their midfield: Bruno Guimaraes.

Troy Deeney says Arsenal-linked Bruno Guimaraes is 10 times better than Tottenham’s Mateus Fernandes

Fernandes was one of West Ham’s few shining lights last season.

The Portuguese midfielder is a terrific player, and he has won over Tottenham fans by scoring a screamer on his debut in pre-season.

Spurs fans should be happy with their new signing, but Arsenal could now be about to show their rivals that there are levels in this game.

Arsenal are pushing hard to sign Guimaraes from Newcastle United, with a third bid worth over £70 million under discussion.

Deeney has his doubts over where the Brazilian would fit in at Arsenal, but he has no concerns about the quality of the player.

In fact, the pundit is so convinced about Guimaraes that he thinks the Newcastle captain is 10 times better than Fernandes.

Arsenal could end up signing him for a fee cheaper than what Spurs paid for their new midfielder.

Deeney said on talkSPORT: “I wonder why £70 million for him (Guimaraes) and £85 million for Fernandes. That’s the one that keeps popping into my mind from Spurs.

“He is 10 times the player that Fernandes is. Have Spurs overpaid?”

Bruno Guimaraes posted this video about Arsenal in 2022. Do you still want to sign him?

Arsenal don’t need to overpay like Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham have found themselves in a desperate situation, so they have spent over £200 million already on new players.

Fernandes for £85 million and Sandro Tonali for £100 million are outrageous figures, and some Arsenal fans may well be jealous of those deals.

However, the Gunners are the Premier League champions and one of the best teams in world football. Even though they have the money, there is no need to spend a fortune on players who are on Spurs’ level.

Instead, they can sign someone like Guimaraes, who is better than both Tonali and Fernandes, for a cheaper fee and start the season as the favourites to win the Premier League again.

That’s the difference between Arsenal and Tottenham – Spurs can do what they want and still end up being embarrassed by the Gunners.
