Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was Arsenal’s hero against Benfica last night. The Gabon star scored the opener and the winner to take us into the next round of the Europa League.

Auba has had a lot to deal with over the last week. He had a poor game against Benfica in the first-leg and his performance against Manchester City on Sunday wasn’t great either.

That attracted a ton of criticism from pundits and the media. The most popular one was from Jamie Redknapp who was adamant that Aubameyang’s best days were behind him.

“Aubameyang is past his best. He’s going to have moments, he’s going to get hat-tricks. But when I watch him sometimes, it’s like he’s lost his superpower. Now I’m seeing a player who looks like he’s going to get bullied,” he said on Sky Sports.

That, predictably, didn’t go down too well with Arsenal supporters. We all know how good Auba is and a rough patch in a season where he has had a lot of personal issues to deal with isn’t going to change anything.

Aubameyang stepped up when Arsenal needed him the most last night. He later laughed off Redknapp’s comment from the weekend, and Arsenal fans absolutely loved it.

Brilliant from Auba

Aubameyang has carried Arsenal on his back ever since he joined us. He almost single-handedly helped us win the FA Cup and the Community Shield last year, and he chose to stay despite interest from top clubs like Barcelona and PSG.

The former Dortmund man will be the first one to admit that he hasn’t been at his best this season. However, to say that he’s completely past his best is a joke, and his performance last night showed exactly that.

Aubameyang laughing it off after scoring a brace to help his side go through to the next round of the competition is a fitting reply to Redknapp. The Sky Sports pundit wouldn’t have enjoyed it, but Arsenal fans most definitely did.
