Arsenal wonderkid Gabriel Martinelli spoke to the club’s official website after his long-awaited start in the Premier League last night.
The Brazillian started his first game since the end of January. He looked sharp throughout the game and deservedly got his goal in the second-half to double Arsenal’s lead.
Just before he scored, it looked like Martinelli had twisted his ankle. He seemed to be in a lot of pain and there was a real concern. His goal eased those fears, but he limped off in the 83rd minute, which brought back the worries.
Asked about the Brazilian’s injury, Arteta told BT Sport: “I don’t know the extent but we will see how it develops in the coming days. Martinelli twisted an ankle and it was sore, but he’s a tough boy.”
With Kieran Tierney, David Luiz, Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard all out, an injury to Martinelli was one Arteta could do without. Thankfully, it looks like there’s nothing to worry about.
Martinelli came out after the game against Sheffield United last night and confirmed that he will be fit to face Slavia Prague in the Europa League on Thursday.
He said: “I am feeling a bit tired but I’m so happy with the goal and even happier with the victory and the three points.
“I work every single day in training, you need to prepare yourself because when Mikel needs you, you need to be there to play and show something.”
Asked about his injured ankle, he said: “No, I am alright to play on Thursday.”
That is a huge relief for Arsenal and Arteta ahead of our most important game of the season. Hopefully, Gabi gets the nod from the start after his brilliant performance last night.
