Lacazette starts and scores for France
Alexandre Lacazette left the French national coach with much to think about following his brace against Germany. Often starting from the bench, the Arsenal forward was given minutes in this game and was rewarded for his efforts in the 2-2 draw. Following the game he said:
“It’s my best match for France, there’s no debate about that. The coach told me it was good. It’s encouraging, it’s good. It’s one of the first matches in which I was really a centre-forward, which is my position, in a big game. Of course I’m happy. There’s going to be a long period without a France game now. You could say I’ve left the coach with a good memory.”
The next warm up games ahead of the World Cup will be in March and Lacazette will hope to continue his good season for Arsenal and give the national selectors a headache.
Mascherano praises Iwobi’s brace
Alex Iwobi received praise from Javier Mascherano following Nigeria’s friendly win over Argentina. The experienced Barcelona defender said:
“Their second goal was well taken by [Iwobi] then the fourth goal by same player killed the game off. He took his goals really well, maybe we should have defended better but the quality of the second strike from the edge of the box makes me think otherwise. Congratulations to Nigeria they deserve to win.”
Nigeria, who will be at the World Cup in Russia beat Argentina 4-2 with Iwobi grabbing two goals. He will surely be in contention for a place in their squad in the summer.
Giggs thinks England need Wilshere
Former Manchester United player Ryan Giggs believes that England missed a player of Jack Wilshere’s quality in last nights game against Brazil. England defended well but it was in possession where they seemed to lack creativity. Giggs went on to say:
“To compete at the top you need to keep the ball, and probably the best midfielder if he keeps the ball is Jack Wilshere. He’s got to play [club football for Arsenal], but in a game like that you can give Jack Wilshere the ball and he will get himself out of trouble just like the Brazilians when England pressed.”
Wilshere was not included in Gareth Southgate’s squad due to lack of Arsenal game time. If he continues to build up first team action over the coming months he will surely be in contention to make the final squad.
