Arsenal told how much it’ll take to sign Toney ‘alternative’ as £22m bid rejected

Arsenal have reportedly made an offer to sign Getafe striker Borja Mayoral.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a number of strikers. However, Ivan Toney is the name that has come up again and again.

The Gunners have been credited with an interest in the Brentford striker for some time. Given the Bees are said to want £100 million for the forward though, Mikel Arteta has been forced to look at alternative options.

It is hard to argue that the north London club do not need a new striker. After all, the current first choice man to lead the line is Gabriel Jesus, who for all of his qualities, simply is not prolific enough. So far this season, the Brazilian has contributed just 3 Premier League goals, having made 15 appearances in the competition.

Meanwhile, Hale End academy graduate Eddie Nketiah is simply too inconsistent at the highest level. The 24-year-old has netted 5 times in 19 top flight outings this season. However, three of those strikes came as a hat-trick in one match against newly-promoted strugglers Sheffield United. Nketiah also has a very poor record of being able to impact matches with goals off the bench.

In an effort to address this issue and bring a more clinical finisher to the club, Arsenal have tabled a £22 million bid for Borja Mayoral as an “alternative” to Toney, as reported by The Sun. However, this opening offer has already been knocked back by the Spanish outfit, as they have put a £39 million price tag on the 26-year-old.

Who is Arsenal target Borja Mayoral?

Mayoral has been in fine form so far this season. He has found the back of the net 14 times in all competitions, with 12 of those strikes coming in La Liga. He is something of a poacher by nature, coming alive in the 18-yard box. The striker knows how to make himself a nightmare for opposition defenders to deal with by constantly making smart runs. When chances do come his way, he is reliably able to keep his composure and find the back of the net.

Mayoral began his career at Real Madrid, showing plenty of promise as a youngster. However, he was only ever able to make 33 first-team appearances for the capital club, and also spent time on loan with Wolfsburg, Levante, and Roma, before joining Getafe on a permanent basis in the summer of 2022.

Coming to Arsenal would represent a step up for Mayoral, who may well be keen to prove he can shine at the very highest level, having failed to establish himself at Real Madrid previously.
