Arsenal told that VAR made ‘the most unfair decision in the history of Girona’ during Champions League clash

Arsenal managed to pick up a 2-1 win over Girona in their final game in the league phase of the Champions League this season.

Mikel Arteta’s side only needed a point to confirm their qualification for the knockout stages, but they got all three and deserved the win.

However, Girona did not make it easy for Arsenal. They opened the scoring in the first half and came close to adding another on a few occasions after the break.

Michel’s side deserves a lot of credit, but a Spanish media outlet believes something really unfair happened to the home side on Wednesday night.

‘The most unfair decision in the history of Girona’ happened during Arsenal’s win

Girona had nothing to play for against Arsenal.

They were out of the Champions League after picking up just three points from their first seven games and played the final fixture just for pride.

Despite that, the Spanish outfit made things difficult for Arsenal.

Arnaut Danjuma took advantage of Thomas Partey to score the opener, while a few others threatened in the second half as well.

Cristhian Stuani even found the back of the net in the 77th minute after a spell of Arsenal dominance, and the hosts felt that they had snatched a draw.

However, the replays showed that Portu was in an offside position when he received the ball before his pass to Stuani for the goal. VAR ruled it out.

That has caused a bit of a storm, as Diari de Girona have branded the VAR call as ‘the most unfair decision in the history of Girona’.

We don’t know what they are talking about – Portu was clearly offside and VAR were right to cancel Stuani’s goal.

What Girona’s manager Michel said about the disallowed goal

Michel made a brilliant name for himself last season after helping Girona finish third in La Liga.

The 49-year-old is a fantastic tactician, and he deserves praise for the way he set his side out on Wednesday night, even though Girona ended on the losing side.

After the game, Michel hailed Arsenal as ‘spectacular’ and ‘one of the best in the world’, but he didn’t seem too happy with VAR’s decision to rule Stuani’s goal out.

He told Marca: “For us, it is a goal.

“He was able to celebrate and enjoy it with a collective hug from the fans. Then they cancelled it, the image of celebrating it will always be in my head.”
