Arsenal missed out on their first top-flight title in 20 years last term by just two points. Their 89 points were still 29 more than Manchester United earned in Ten Hag’s second season at Old Trafford. The Red Devils also registered a goal difference of minus-one to Arsenal’s +62.

It did not take Manchester United long to concede a goal in pre-season, too, as they lost 1-0 to Rosenborg BK in their opening friendly. But Ten Hag then oversaw a 2-0 win over Rangers ahead of Manchester United meeting Arsenal in Los Angeles to kick off their tour of the US.

Arsenal team and injury news
Arteta landed a big boost ahead of Arsenal’s friendly against Manchester United after seeing Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Magalhaes and Kai Havertz report for pre-season. The trio did not fly over to the US with the Gunners due to their Copa America and Euro 2024 commitments.

Martinelli and Gabriel helped Brazil into the quarter-finals of the 2024 Copa America, which was staged in America. While Havertz helped Germany reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 as the host nation. The trio took part in their first pre-season session with Arsenal on Friday.
But a player who will not feature for Arsenal against Manchester United is Emile Smith Rowe as he closes in on a transfer to Fulham. Arteta also left the midfielder out of his side for their friendly with Bournemouth as the move gained pace, rather than a possible farewell outing.

Prediction
Having allowed Bournemouth to come back into their previous friendly to secure a 1-1 draw, Arteta will want Arsenal to secure their first win in the USA this summer against Manchester United. But the Red Devils have the momentum after beating Rangers 2-0 in their last game.
Form does not really mean much in pre-season, though, as managers tinker with their line-ups. Arteta also now has more players at his disposal, so will want to see the condition that Havertz, Gabriel and Martinelli have reported back in following their international duties.
The trio can also give Arsenal a nice lift from the bench having only trained for the first time on Friday. If the friendly is still tight, Havertz and Martinelli could be the difference between Arsenal beating Manchester United or falling to another pre-season defeat to their big rival.
On the other side of the pitch, Joshua Zirkzee will also want to show Arsenal what they have missed out on after signing for Manchester United. The Netherlands striker was also one of forwards whom Arteta considered signing this summer before then heading to Old Trafford.
