Arsenal’s need for a new centre-back increased massively following the news about William Saliba’s injury.

Julian Alvarez has already delivered his verdict on shock Arsenal target Cristian Romero

Arsenal haven’t signed a player from Tottenham Hotspur since the legendary free transfer of Sol Campbell over 20 years ago.

The two North London clubs share a fierce rivalry, and nobody expects a transfer between them.

However, a shock report from Italy has claimed that Arsenal are interested in signing Tottenham captain Romero this summer.

That would annoy Spurs fans to no end, but it could end up pleasing a major Gunners target in Julian Alvarez.

The Argentine is a big admirer of Romero, so much so that he has previously named him as the best defender he has come up against (ESPN).

In a different interview, Alvarez named Romero as the best defender in history. That is a big stretch, but it shows how highly he rates the centre-half.

We don’t expect Mikel Arteta or Berta to even consider the Spurs skipper as a target, but if they bring him in, he could potentially convince Alvarez to make the move to North London as well.

Arsenal should go nowhere near Cristian Romero

Tottenham fans used to hail Romero as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, but in our opinion, he was above average at best.

On his day, he is definitely capable of producing a good performance, but over the course of a season, he will let the team down multiple times.

Furthermore, Romero’s disciplinary issues have been a massive problem for Tottenham, while injuries have troubled him as well.

Arsenal need to replace a calm and composed defender like Saliba until he is back. Romero is the complete opposite and would be a terrible fit.

For those reasons, we think Arsenal should go nowhere near the Spurs captain.
