Marseille were humiliated at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain over the weekend, and the French media have been rather critical of Arsenal loanee Ethan Nwaneri.

Nwaneri’s Marseille loan started with a bang as the Arsenal youngster netted on his debut; however, things have since gone downhill.

Away at FC Paris, the French media slammed Nwaneri as the visitors threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2.

Now, the teenager’s latest performance is drawing big criticism, as he was involved in Marseille’s 5-0 defeat at the Parc des Princes.

French media slam Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri vs PSG

The French media did not hold back in their assessments of Ethan Nwaneri’s shocking cameo against PSG over the weekend.

The Arsenal youngster received very low ratings from the media and was described as ‘invisible’, ‘disastrous’ and told he ‘offered nothing’.

The 18-year-old was hauled off at half-time as he struggled to have any sort of impact against the European champions.

Marseille could sack Roberto De Zerbi, which would be so frustrating for Arsenal, as it was the Italian who promised him game time.

Following Marseille’s heavy defeat, Foot Mercato gave him a 3/10 rating and wrote: “Invisible, lacking direction, and constantly forced to drop back to defend and help his bewildered teammates, the attacking midfielder endured a difficult first half. He appeared too shaky and, above all, didn’t have the opportunity to showcase his ball control.”

Meanwhile, he was given a 1/10 by Le Phoceen: “Ethan Nwaneri had a disastrous match. Invisible, rarely involved, and unable to create any openings, he never had any impact on the game. His ball control was timid, his decision-making uninspired, and his attacking contribution nonexistent.”

Finally, 90Min rated him 3/10: “Ethan Nwaneri offered nothing in the first half before being substituted. The English forward constantly drifted back onto his left foot to find solutions in the heart of midfield. It wasn’t enough, as he gave the ball away too often.”

Mikel Arteta will be worried by what is being said about the teenager, and he might be regretting his decision to send him on loan there.

Roberto De Zerbi explains Ethan Nwaneri’s substitution

De Zerbi has revealed that he subbed Nwaneri off at half-time as he felt his teammates were not supporting him enough and he wanted to protect him, given his age.

“As for Nwaneri, he wasn’t having a great night; he wasn’t getting much support from his teammates. He needed to be protected, like all young players,” he said.

It’s certainly been a baptism of fire for the Hale End graduate, and hopefully, he and De Zerbi can eventually turn things around.
