Piero Hincapie and Ecuador are facing a likely exit from the 2026 World Cup after being held to a shock draw with Curacao.
Ecuador were held to a goalless draw by Curacao, who produced a magnificent defensive display, and their goalkeeper became the first player to make 15 saves in one World Cup match.
🏆 Which Arsenal star will go the furthest at this summer’s World Cup?
Zubimendi and Spain? Saka and England? Saliba and France?
The South American side have now taken just one point from their first two matches after also losing to the Ivory Coast.
Following the dismal display in Kansas, the local media in Ecuador were not best pleased with the team and were particularly unhappy with the Arsenal defender.
Ecuadorian media slam Piero Hincapie’s performance vs Curacao
The Ecuadorian media have slammed Piero Hincapie’s performance, with the Arsenal defender off the pace against Curacao.
Ecuador had 27 attempts at goal, but could not find a way past Curacao, with Eloy Room making an incredible 15 saves.
Meanwhile, at the other end, Ecuador managed to keep Curacao, but they still had 10 attempts, and could have even nicked a win.
It was a worrying performance from Hincapie, who struggled in advanced positions and defensively as well.
The Arsenal defender committed one foul and was dribbled past twice during the game, which has left the local media slamming his performance.
- ESPN Colombia gave him 5/10: “He provided support for Pacho and also joined the attack, although not in the best way to support Estupinan. He had a chance from a corner kick, but his header went wide.”
- Primicias: “This must have been the most confusing match he’s ever played for Ecuador, because he spent more time getting forward in the final third than actually defending. He even looked like a centre forward. He couldn’t connect with Pervis either. He looked very uncomfortable.”
Hincapie did not play well against the Ivory Coast either, and the defender’s weaknesses are being exposed slightly out of Mikel Arteta’s system.
Luckily, Arsenal did not sell Riccardo Calafiori to Real Madrid this summer, and it remains clear that the Italian should be the first choice left-back next term.
