Former Arsenal prodigy Jack WIlshere was one of the greatest wonderkids to ever come through the Hale End Academy, and he was seemingly destined to become world-class.

Wilshere was an outstanding young midfielder, who impressed enough that he broke through into Arsene Wenger’s side as a teenager, and did not look out of place alongside the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri.

However, injuries blighted him throughout his career, before he then retired early after being unable to shake his issues, and he has now admitted his regret that he departed Arsenal in 2018 when attempting to find fitness.

The way Wilshere’s career ended up was a travesty, given the sheer talent he displayed early on, and his former youth coach has now explained why his ability was obvious even from a very young age.

Arsenal coach Dan Buck highlights Jack Wilshere’s remarkable natural ability

Speaking to Hale End Productions on YouTube, long-serving Arsenal youth coach Dan Buck revealed that he saw Wilshere just before he joined Arsenal in his childhood days, and claimed that his talent on the ball was obvious from the start.

“The first time we actually saw him, he went into an under-10s group, which was a group of elite players. Arsenal at that time were the best academy in the country,” he stated of Wilshere’s environment.

“The recruitment team we had in the place the players they would attract to the club was incredible, and yes Jack had something special, but a lot of the players in that group had something special too.

“What Jack had that he took along into his playing career, was the way he could just receive the ball, move the ball, get it the other side and he was just such a hard player to mark.

“He had such a desire, he was just a wonderful player to watch. To see him grow up and see him in the first eleven and do so well – it’s just such a shame what happened with the injuries, but it just shows any young player, that you can have all the potential ability in the world and sometimes circumstances just go against you.”

Wilshere quickly rose to stardom as soon as he entered the first team, becoming a key player under Wenger and even winning the PFA Young Player Of The Year Award.

The midfielder would go on to dominate an all-time great Barcelona midfield in the Champions League and the World was at his feet.

However, a succession of bad injuries derailed his progress, and even when he returned in 2012-13, he struggled for consistent form and fitness.

The likes of Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil reduced Wenger’s reliance on Wilshere, and he continued to slip down the pecking order and struggled with injuries, before a loan move to Bournemouth in 2016-17.

At this point, he had gone a few years without hitting top form or staying fit, and this was the beginning of the end for him. Wilshere faded away after leaving Arsenal in 2018, and the once generational talent had been forced into retirement before the age of 30.
