Arsenal are still on the hunt for a new sporting director months on from Edu Gaspar’s shock resignation from his position at the club.

The Brazilian had helped place many of the foundations that the current side have been built on under Mikel Arteta.

However, with Edu leaving Arsenal, it marked the end of an era before the start of a new one at the Emirates Stadium.

It gives the ownership and sporting department a chance to reassess where the project is at before deciding the next direction to go in.

Over the January transfer window, Jason Ayto was in charge of the sporting department on an interim basis.

He, along with many others, has been linked with the chance to become the next permanent sporting director at Arsenal.

With the summer transfer window now coming into focus, here’s a look at the latest on the situation.

What has happened at Arsenal since Edu Gaspar left?

With Edu Gaspar resigning from Arsenal in November 2024, looking for a new challenge, the Gunners had to shuffle around accordingly.

The backroom team saw Ayto given the chance to impress as an interim in the position until a decision was made on the next appointment.

In that time, the January transfer window has come and gone, with some criticism levied against the hierarchy for not providing Arteta with more forward options.

With the big changes in the backroom team, TBR Football’s Graeme Bailey gave the lowdown on what has actually happened.

“Edu was taken out but the processes were already in place for this club and how they want to run.

“I don’t see it as a major issue that the person isn’t in place, Jason Ayto has taken over the reins there, Richard Garlick and others besides that and there wasn’t a massive vacuum when Edu left.

“A lot of his responsibilities and tasks have been shared out elsewhere within the club.”

It certainly suggests Arsenal are running fine for now and as they gear up for a big summer, there is a plan in place.

However, in the long-term, that direction could well change if a new appointment is made, though the timeframe on that remains unclear.

When will Arsenal appoint a new sporting director?

Plenty of names have been in the frame for the job at the Emirates Stadium as sporting director.

Those have ranged from experienced professionals in the field to potential ex-players who could bring their expertise to the club.

Some may think Arsenal are poised to make the decision before the summer transfer window, but emphasis is placed on getting the right person rather than the quickest option.

Bailey continued: “There’s no timeline there, the club is still running at a very high level, running well, and they’re very happy with how things are going off-field.

“They’re not claiming perfection by any stretch of the imagination, they never have and never will. They’re happy but they’re striving to improve and that’s why they’re assessing to see if they can improve in the sporting director role and that’s part of the process they’re looking at.

“They’d rather do it sooner rather than later, but there’s nothing specific on a time frame.”

It certainly paints a picture of an Arsenal built on doing the right processes and ready to bend rather than break under adversity and a new challenge.
