Arsenal star Leandro Trossard has earned mixed reviews after his side progressed to the Champions League quarter-finals against Porto.

Whilst the Belgian did score a vital goal which meant that the 1-0 deficit from the first leg was reversed, he did struggle throughout the game before being withdrawn in extra time.

There are arguments to be made that Gabriel Jesus should have started on the wing instead, with Gabriel Martinelli absent, but Trossard’s goal was a well-taken one after Martin Odegaard’s excellent assist.

Despite his struggles on the wing as he was outmatched physically by the Porto defence, and his failure to replace Martinelli’s speed a concern, Trossard does have qualities which make him a desirable pick for Mikel Arteta.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, journalist Charles Watts claimed that despite his difficult evening, Trossard showed that he is the best natural finisher at the club.

“The way Trossard took his goal, given it had been frustrating 40 minutes up for him up to that point, I thought was very, very good,” he stated.

“Martin Odegaard was fantastic all night, it was a brilliant assist, a great little combination between him and Trossard, I think the through ball is perfect, Trossard’s touch was great, the finish was great, the through ball was begging to be put away.

“When Odegaard plays a quality ball like that, he just wants someone to finish it. Time and time again this season, we’ve seen Odegaard play those type of passes and they haven’t been finished off.

“Fair play to Trossard, I think he’s Arsenal’s best finisher, Leo Trossard, and I thought he showed that last night in the big, big moment, even though he wasn’t having the best of games.

“It had been a frustrating night, he really stepped up and it was a lovely finish for him.”

Why Leandro Trossard needs to play in the middle for Arsenal

Trossard has both excelled and disappointed at times this season in what has been a strangely inconsistent campaign for the Belgian.

His tally of 11 goals is only bettered by Bukayo Saka, but at times his displays when starting on the wing have been underwhelming.

He is a strong natural finisher, and often impresses as a false nine, or when coming off the bench to find chances in the final third.

His finish against Porto was excellent, and showed levels of composure which others may lack. If he is to play, he will find himself on the end of more of these chances if playing through the middle than out wide.
