‘Arteta’s got to do one thing’: Neville explains what Arsenal have to change to end winless run

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville spoke on his podcast about the one thing Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has to change to end his side’s terrible run in the Premier League.

The Gunners have had the worst start to a league campaign in 46 years. We are currently 15th in the table after just four wins in our first 14 games.

Rival fans are hoping to see us go down this season. Sadly, that is a serious possibility if we continue to play like we have recently.

However, there is still a lot of time for Arteta to change things around. Arsenal need some spark in their attack to get the confidence back, and Neville feels he knows how the Gunners boss can make that happen.

Arteta should change Arsenal’s style of play

He said: “It just looks now very drab, that’s the one thing I think Mikel Arteta’s got to say. If you watch this Leeds team, there’s a massive enjoyment in the players and how they play.”

“I think Mikel Arteta’s got to do one thing in the next few weeks, the results may not come, the performances may not come, but he’s got to make those Arsenal players look like they’re enjoying themselves. They just don’t look like they’re enjoying themselves on the football pitch”

“Watching that game (against Everton), I saw a team of players who looked like they were toiling and struggling with the fact of, maybe the way they were being asked to play or whether they didn’t believe in the system. Maybe they didn’t think the players alongside them weren’t good enough. Something’s not right.”

Neville has got a point. Arsenal are renowned around the world as a team that plays beautiful football. Arsene Wenger stamped that trademark on the club during his time here, but we haven’t played anything like any of his sides since his departure.

Yes, every manager wants to instil his own style on his team. However, that could completely be against how the players want to play, and that often reflects in their performances, and subsequently on the results. That could well be the reason behind our failures this term.
