Arsenal embarrassed Real Madrid over two legs in the Champions League quarter-final.

The Gunners ran out 5-1 winners on aggregate, knocking the reigning Champions out of Europe’s elite competition in emphatic fashion.

The first leg was humiliating enough for Carlo Ancelotti’s men, but Real Madrid lost 2-1 to Arsenal on their own patch on Wednesday night, with this particular match a real low for this iteration of the Spanish giants.

While Mikel Arteta’s men march on to the semi-finals to take on Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid are left to reflect on what was a disastrous tie for them.

Carlo Ancelotti admits he could be sacked imminently after Arsenal clash

Real Madrid are expecting to compete in the latter stages of the Champions League every season, whilst being expected to win La Liga year-on-year.

They currently sit four points behind Barcelona in the Spanish top flight, with seven games remaining, while they’re out of Europe.

This has inevitably sparked conversations about Ancelotti’s future, with the Italian at risk of losing his position in the Bernabeu dugout.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the veteran coach admitted that he could be sacked as soon as ‘tomorrow’.

“It could be this year, next year when my contract runs out,” he said.

“There’s no problem about it.

“But when I am done here, I will be grateful to this club. It could be tomorrow, in one year, or in 10 years, but I will be grateful to this club. And that’s it. Full stop.

“We have done very well in the last seasons but this year we have had to suffer. Things haven’t gone as expected, but in sport it can happen because there are no unbeatable teams.

Arsenal potentially sparking a change in management at Real Madrid will certainly elicit pride from the Gunners faithful, who watched their team dismantle a European juggernaut over two matches.

What Carlo Ancelotti said about Arsenal after Champions League match

Arteta produced a tactical masterclass against Ancelotti over both legs, with Real Madrid limited to just 1.9 expected goals in 180 minutes.

The Spaniard proved his tactical superiority over the former Everton boss, coaching his team to a comfortable victory against a side that arguably has more individual talent.

“Arsenal were better than us,” Ancelotti said.

“We tried to do our best. Maybe the overturned penalty was a turning point. That could have changed it.

“But Arsenal defended very well. We found it difficult to find spaces. We were better than normal in our intensity level, but it wasn’t enough.”
