Chris Sutton apologises to Arsenal fans immediately after making his Champions League final prediction

Chris Sutton has backed Arsenal to win the Champions League final, but he is not entirely sure that is good news for the Gunners.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast on Saturday morning, the former striker made his prediction for the game in Budapest.

But he immediately issued a caveat that Arsenal fans should consider before getting their hopes up.

“The thing is my predictions are usually rubbish, but I will say Arsenal to edge it 2-1. Sorry for that Arsenal fans,” Sutton said.

A back-handed compliment then, of sorts.

It’s Champions League final day, simple question: How are you feeling?

Sutton is always quite self-deprecating about his own prediction record, and Arsenal fans will be all too aware that a Sutton tip does not mean anything, in the grand scheme of things.

That said, a 2-1 Arsenal win is a perfectly reasonable prediction. PSG are the favourites and the reigning champions, but Arsenal come into the game as Premier League champions.

A massive weight of pressure has been lifted off of them, and now they have momentum, belief and a defensive record in the Champions League that is unmatched by any other side in the competition this season.

The Arsenal players are confident, the manager Mikel Arteta is confident, and even ex-players such as Ian Wright are confident.

Whether Sutton’s track record works for or against Arsenal on this occasion remains to be seen. But at least he said sorry in advance.
