Former Premier League star Chris Sutton spoke to Stadium Astro today about the chances of seeing Brendan Rodgers replace Mikel Arteta at Arsenal in the near future.
The Gunners boss is under a ton of pressure after what has been a terrible season. A section of our fan base want him out already, and many view Rodgers as the ideal man to take over and bring our club back to where it belongs.
The Leicester City boss has also been linked to the vacant Tottenham Hotspur job down the road. Rodgers, labelled as an ‘elite manager‘ by Perry Groves, would certainly be a good option for the two North London clubs, but Sutton believes there’s no way that will happen any time soon.
Sutton: Rodgers will not join Arsenal or Tottenham
He said: “Why would Brendan Rodgers go to a smaller club, like Tottenham? Why would he go when their star man (Harry Kane) wants out? He’s got a good team at Leicester.
“Why would he want to go to Tottenham, or Arsenal, at this stage? The North London clubs are not doing very well at the moment, and he’s just won the FA Cup. Come on, it’s not going to happen.”
If there’s one thing we agree with Sutton on, it’s that Tottenham are a small club. However, we can’t really dispute his opinion on Rodgers not being interested in the Arsenal job either can we?
The good thing is that Arsenal will not have to look for replacements any time soon. The Gunners are set to stick with Arteta for a few more months at the very least, and it’s not beyond the Spaniard to completely turn things around.
The Arsenal boss, unlike last year, will have a full pre-season to get his ideas across to his players. That could prove to really beneficial for the Gunners, especially if Arteta receives sufficient backing from the board as well in this summer’s transfer window.
If things do go horribly wrong and Arteta is a sacked next season, Rodgers will surely be someone on Arsenal’s radar. However, it will be extremely difficult to lure him away from his brilliant project at the King Power.
