Danny Welbeck spent five years at Arsenal.
The England international joined the Gunners from Manchester United in the summer of 2014. It was a shock to see him move to the Emirates, but he became a bit of a favourite among the fans soon.
Adored as ‘That guy Welbz’ from large sections of the fan base, he produced some great moments in the famous red and white during his time at the club.
Welbeck also played with many exceptional players in North London, and he has now made a controversial claim about one of them.
Danny Welbeck says Robin van Persie was better than Alexis Sanchez
Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez have received both love and hate from Arsenal fans over the years.
The Dutchman joined the Gunners for £3 million from Feyenoord all the way back in 2004 (BBC). He developed brilliantly under Arsene Wenger and went on to score a ton of goals for the Gunners.
Sanchez, on the other hand, joined Arsenal from Barcelona in 2014, and he became one of the best players in the world very quickly.
The Chile international was unstoppable on his day, and carried the North Londoners on his back for a couple of years.
Just like Van Persie, however, Sanchez chose to leave Arsenal for Manchester United, who happen to be Welbeck’s old club as well.
In a game of Winner Stays On on Mail Sport, Welbeck was asked to choose who is better out of Van Persie and Sanchez having played with both of them in the past.
The Englishman chose Van Persie. He also picked the Netherlands icon over Dimitar Berbatov, Didier Drogba and even Harry Kane.
Robin van Persie vs Alexis Sanchez stats at Arsenal compared
Van Persie and Sanchez had a few incredible seasons at Arsenal.
The Dutch striker spent a lot more time at the club than Sanchez did, both of them had huge impacts. But, who fared better?
Here’s what the stats say.
| Games | Goals | Assists | Minutes per goal or assist | |
| Robin van Persie at Arsenal | 278 | 132 | 55 | 99.98 |
| Alexis Sanchez at Arsenal | 166 | 80 | 44 | 109.32 |
Despite having a smaller sample size at Arsenal, Sanchez averaged fewer direct goal contributions than Van Persie did.
However, if the former Barcelona star had stayed at the club for a few more years, we are convinced that he would’ve ended up with more goals and assists than the current Feyenoord boss.
The common theme following their departures, however, was that both Sanchez and Van Persie wanted to return to Arsenal after joining Manchester United.
