‘Do me a favour’: Alan Shearer defends Arsenal as critics continue to take aim

Arsenal don’t seem to be able to do anything right in the eyes of some pundits and fans but Alan Shearer believes people need to pipe down.

The Gunners remain on course for a quadruple but with so much talk over their style of player, Shearer believes that there’s not a lot else Mikel Arteta’s side can actually do.

How many goal contributions will these players combine for next season?

Alan Shearer says he’s not having criticism levelled at Arsenal

Speaking on the latest episode of the Rest Is Football, Shearer was quick to defend Arsenal and suggested people need to pull themselves together.

“I’m not having the criticism. I don’t get it. I said before, they finished top of the Champions League group,” Shearer commented.

“They’re in the final, they’re in the quarter-final of the FA Cup, they’re seven points clear in the Premier League. Yet, people are finding a way to criticise them. Do me a favour.

“Whoever you’re looking at in every position, wherever they are in cup competitions or league or whatever, they’re absolutely flying and forget about any other negative comment, they couldn’t do any better at this moment in time.”

It’s about time someone said what Shearer has

A lot of the narrative around Arsenal this season has been about negative tactics or relying on set-pieces to score goals. At times, those points are valid but in the main, it’s complete rubbish.

Yes, Arsenal have found a way to capitalise on set-pieces and make sure they’re effective from them. But what is actually the problem with that?

Football is played in many different ways and Arsenal are finding a way to win. The recent criticism from people like Paul Scholes is just bizarre, given he played in a Man United team that very much were in the game of finding any way to win.

As Shearer says, Arsenal are in a cup final, unbeaten in Europe, and have pulled away at the top of the league while safely navigating through the FA Cup’s early rounds.

Arsenal are just showing they’ve got what it takes to compete and for all the noise, if they win the trophies at the end of the season, history will not care one jot how they achieved it.
