After Arsenal’s recent run of results, it’s fair to say that news of Edu Gaspar’s decision to leave the club has come at a very bad time.

Edu will leave his role as Arsenal’s sporting director in the near future, reports that aren’t quite official just yet.

The Brazilian has reportedly endured an uncomfortable relationship with Arsenal’s hierarchy of late, which has led to his decision to leave his post.

Edu has enjoyed an excellent working relationship with Mikel Arteta since the pair both joined the club in 2019.

Initially starting as Arsenal’s technical director, Edu was then promoted to the role of sporting director three years later in 2022, the position he is now vacating.

On the whole, Edu’s return to the Emirates Stadium has been a big success, however, he won’t be sticking around to see if all of his hard work results in the trophy wins that the club are craving.

Edu Gaspar could be leaving Arsenal to work for another Premier League club

All that being said, Sky Sports have now shared some more details on what the next steps could entail for Edu after departing Arsenal.

Soon to be free to find a new role, the Brazilian is under consideration for a role with Evangelos Marinakis’ teams.

Marinakis currently owns Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos and Rio Ave, with the Greek businessman soon looking to buy a fourth team in Europe.

The report confirms that Edu’s decision has taken Arsenal by ‘surprise’, but was unable to share whether Marinakis’ interest played any role in Edu’s departure.

Of course, it would leave a bad taste for Arsenal fans if they soon saw Edu working behind the scenes at Forest, a club they’d rather be hand-picking talent from.

Edu Gaspar’s best signing at Arsenal

There’s no doubt that Edu will be a significant loss for Arsenal in the short-term, a charismatic character who matched Arteta’s ambition.

And although Arsenal’s recent deadline day deals haven’t necessarily impressed, ones which were inspired by Edu, the sporting director has been successful in the transfer market on the whole.

Of all of his deals, a bargain move for Gabriel Martinelli was perhaps the pick of the bunch.

Martinelli was a relatively unknown name playing in the lower tiers of Brazilian football when Edu spotted his talent.

And Arsenal have struck gold with Martinelli, who has more than ten-folded his value since his arrival in north London.
