Edu has now put Arsenal in ‘really strong position’ after what he did in January

Arsenal will be in a strong position come the summer transfer window.

Arsenal endured an extremely quiet January transfer window with no first-team departures or arrivals.

However, there are certainly areas of Mikel Arteta’s squad in need of investment. Heading into the winter window, the Gunners were keen to add a striker to their ranks and bolster their defensive contingent. Those concerns surely still remain.

On top of that, Arsenal are due a midfield overhaul, and will need to find a replacement for Aaron Ramsdale, whose summer departure has been described as “inevitable.”

This lack of January spending, though, may well stand Arsenal in good stead come the summer.

Journalist Dean Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport, certainly feels that the north London club will be well positioned to spend ahead of next season. He said, “the good thing for Arsenal fans is that because they haven’t panicked, because they haven’t done any business, they’re in a really strong position now for the summer. They will be able to really make the signings that are needed. So you want a striker, you want another central midfielder, you want to more depth in that squad. It’s going to be coming.”

What Arsenal must do this summer

Like many other Premier League clubs in January, Arsenal will have been extremely wary of falling foul of top flight spending rules and Financial Fair Play regulations. This will have severely restricted Arsenal’s ability to spend this winter, as they splashed the cash significantly in the summer without also making enough statement sales to offset their losses.

Having seen Everton and Nottingham Forest charged with breaching Premier League spending restrictions this season, the Gunners will be cautious to avoid the same fate.

Sporting director Edu clearly decided not to push the Gunners’ spending any further in the January transfer window, and will now be eyeing up a busy summer. If Arsenal can buy and sell well this summer, then Edu’s decision to keep their powder dry until then may well come to be seen as something of a masterstroke. 

Of course, the proof of this theory will come in the summer. Arsenal need to make sure that they make the most of that transfer window. Pressure will be on them to sell well and address the flaws in their squad. Arteta will expect the backing of the board, and Edu will be the man on the spot to get the required deals over the line.
