Expected announcement date revealed as Arsenal star agrees new contract in major boost

Arsenal star Takehiro Tomiyasu has been in talks over a new deal for some time, and there now appears to have been a breakthrough in negotiations.

The 25-year-old has 18 months left on his deal, but with an option to extend it by a year, but the club have nevertheless acted to tie him down to fresh terms.

Tomiyasu has struggled with injuries at times this season, and is currently away at the Asia Cup, but when he has featured he has been excellent, and his versatility makes him crucial for Mikel Arteta.

It has now been revealed that Tomiyasu has agreed to a new deal, and this will be announced when he returns from his tournament duties with Japan.

A report from TEAMTALK has now revealed that Tomiyasu has agreed to a contract extension, and agreed terms before he departed for the Asia Cup.

This new deal will see the end of speculation linking him with a move to Bayern Munich, and an announcement will follow when he returns to North London.

Japan have reached the quarter-finals of the Asia Cup, and will play Iran tomorrow in a knockout game. A loss would see Tomiyasu potentially return later this week, but will not feature on Sunday against Liverpool regardless.

Should Japan progress to the semi-finals, the game will take place on February 7th, and should they then reach the finals, that will take place next Saturday.

Depending on Japan’s progress, he could be back in time to face West Ham on 11th February, with his contract announcement expected before he lines up in Arsenal colours again.

Takehiro Tomiyasu’s injury concerns

Despite his ability, there is a concern over Tomiyasu’s fitness given how many games he has missed since his arrival in 2021.

Thomas Partey has also been heavily injury-prone in his time at the club, and has suffered yet another setback in his long-awaited recovery.

When Tomiyasu returns, he will hope to put together a run of games and continue to build his fitness. If he can stay healthy for the second half of the campaign, he will be a vital asset across the back line.

Tomiyasu’s ability to provide more defensive stability on both flanks makes him an excellent substitute, and he could even be selected ahead of Oleksandr Zinchenko when coming up against speedy wingers, as the Ukrainian has struggled against the likes of Mohamed Salah in recent months.
