Journalist Fabrizio Romano has now explained why Edu Gaspar is so highly thought of at Arsenal.

Edu was appointed as Arsenal sporting director in July 2019. Before the end of that year, Mikel Arteta took the reins in the dugout at the Emirates Stadium.

The pair have since worked closely together on transforming the north London club’s fortunes. When the going got tough for Arteta in the earlier part of his tenure, Edu played a key role in protecting the manager’s job.

The Brazilian has also taken on a great deal of responsibility in the transfer market. Under his watch, the likes of Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, Gabriel Jesus, and Ben White, amongst many others, have come into the club.

Edu, of course, has a long-standing connection with Arsenal. He featured for the club as a player, making 127 appearances across a five-year spell at Highbury Stadium. The midfielder won two Premier League titles and two FA Cups in his time as an Arsenal player and was a member of the iconic ‘Invincibles’ squad.

Now in a behind the scenes role, he is working towards bringing silverware to the club once again. He and Arteta have made Arsenal genuine title contenders again. The Gunners are currently top of the Premier League table will be aiming to lift the trophy for first time since Edu’s playing days at the end of this season.

If Arsenal are able to go all the way this season and claim the title, Edu will be deserving of a great deal of the credit.

Why is Edu Gaspar so important to Arsenal?

Fabrizio Romano has now provided an insight into how the 45-year-old integrates himself with the playing squad at Arsenal and the work he does on a daily basis to assist the club. As quoted by CaughtOffside, the reporter said of Edu, “he’s probably underrated but he’s done an excellent job at Arsenal. Extending contracts of top players like [Bukayo] Saka, [William] Saliba, [Gabriel] Martinelli, Odegaard and many others; signing super stars like Declan Rice with perfect strategy; players love him and the daily contact at the ground.”

“Also, he protected Arteta in difficult moments at the beginning. Arsenal are a fantastic football club now after a difficult few years at the end of the Arsene Wenger era. It’s now a wonderful project and Edu deserves a good part of the credit for that.”

It is vital that Edu is able to retain a good relationship with the first team squad, for various reasons. He can serve as another set of eyes and ears around the club for Arteta. Players may feel more comfortable discussing certain issues with him than they would be with the manager. His presence and attention will also make players feel more valued by the club, which can help when it comes to renegotiating contracts.

The sporting director’s importance to Arsenal cannot be overstated. The formula of his working relationship with Arteta is clearly working and could be set to yield amazing results for the club.
