Arsenal star Gabriel Magalhaes has been exceptional for the Gunners this season, but it was a different story for him as Brazil were beaten by Uruguay.
Brazil were disappointing as they fell to a first defeat to Uruguay since 2001, as Marcelo Bielsa’s side won 2-0 in Montevideo, and the Brazilian press have laid into the players responsible for the loss.
Gabriel, in what was his fourth senior International appearance, started alongside Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos, but both were powerless to stop Uruguay and Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez from sealing a 2-0 victory.
Gabriel has been highlighted for his role in the second goal, in which Nunez managed to beat him in the box before crossing to Nicolas De La Cruz to finish, and he is among the players to be slammed by the Brazilian press.
Gabriel criticised following Brazil defeat
Brazilian outlet GeGlobo have claimed that whilst Gabriel was better than his defensive partner Marquinhos, his role in the second goal capped off a poor showing for his country.
“A little better than his partner. He risked more vertical passes on the ball exit, was responsible for the first submission of Brazil already with an hour of play, but also had decisive failure in a goal. It allowed Darwin to rotate even with the marking adjusted within the area and to touch the De la Cruz mark the second,” they stated in their player ratings, with the 25-year-old’s display being given a 4.5/10 rating.
GOAL were also critical of the defender, giving him a 5/10 rating and highlighting how he “never really settled into the game,” as well as being given a “hard time” by Nunez.
Gabriel’s mixed break

It was a tale of two games for Gabriel, as he scored his first goal for his country against Venezuela on Friday, but Brazil failed to win both their fixtures.
It was a tough game for the defender in Uruguay, and whilst he was not fully to blame for his side’s defeat, his role in the second goal has opened him up to criticism.
This is in contrast to his excellent form with Arsenal right now, and he will hope to return to his best form on Saturday as his side travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea, a fixture in which he scored the winning goal last year.
