Fans make the same point about Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli as Brazil crash out of World Cup

Gabriel Martinelli and Brazil crashed out of the World Cup this evening to Norway and fans have been reacting to proceedings on social media.

Carlo Ancelotti opted to start Martinelli in a deeper midfield role but he was powerless to stop Erling Haaland from powering in two goals to send Norway into the last eight.

In fairness to Martinelli, he had a decent enough game in a different position to what he’s used to.

In fact, many would argue that Brazil lost some impetus when Martinelli was taken off to be replaced by Neymar in the second half.

Sure enough, over on X, that is the exact point a number of fans are making when it comes to Martinelli and Brazil.

It was a surprise to many to see Martinelli start in a midfield role but as mentioned, he was one of the better players for Brazil.

Him being taken off was somewhat a surprise and some fans are suggesting Carlo Ancelotti made a huge error.

“Brazil have themselves to blame on this one. They could have sealed the game before the second hydration break. Penalyy miss, Endrick miss, Vini Junior trivela, Rayan and Martinelli (their biggest progressive threat today) subbed too early is a mistake by Ancelotti,” one fan wrote.

While another backed it up, commenting ‘Brazil lost this game when they took off Martinelli for Neymar’.

The theme continued as well, with Ancelotti coming in for more stick from fans.

“Subbing off Martinelli and Guimaraes for Endrick and Neymar just for fan service” one wrote, while another added “Carlo Ancelotti is to blame. He removed willing runners Rayan and Martinelli who pressed from the front and caused headaches for Norway.”

Clearly, people could see what Martinelli was bringing to the table and one other fan claimed that the subbing of Martinelli ‘spoilt’ the game for Brazil.

Brazil, then, find themselves going home earlier than many anticipated.

Martinelli, along with teammate Gabriel Magalhaes, will now have time to rest and somewhere deep inside, Mikel Arteta will be delighted to have both back in full health and ready to recharge.
