Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has delivered his verdict on what Arsenal could do this summer after the release of their yearly finances.

The Gunners recently published their accounts for the 2022/23 season, with Arsenal losing £52m having once again spent big on the transfer market and cutting their losses with bad deals over the years.

As per the reports, the entire deal for Nicolas Pepe cost Arsenal well over £100m, with the winger finally leaving the north London club for good last summer in a deal that could go down as one of the worst the Gunners have ever made.

Yet speaking to i News, expert Maguire has revealed that Arsenal are in a really strong position to spend big once again this summer due to the moves the Gunners have made to their books in recent years.

Whilst spending on transfers has been high, the dramatic reduction of wages and the massive increase in matchday revenues have put Arsenal in a healthy financial position, especially when compared to other Premier League clubs.

Maguire said when asked what Arsenal could do this summer: “You have to factor in the cost of recruiting Declan Rice in 2023-24 and other signings, so the club has to box clever as all clubs do.

“But I still feel as though there’s a degree of flexibility within the Arsenal finances for them to still go out in the summer window and be competitive.”

A lot has changed at Arsenal since the appointment of Mikel Arteta in 2019, yet one big thing that has made a major impact at the club is accepting short-term losses for long-term gain.

The termination of contracts for the likes of Mesut Ozil, Pepe and Willian have helped Arsenal out in a big way in getting their finances sorted and resetting the wage structure to something more manageable.

And whilst the Gunners posted a loss last year, it’s clear that Arsenal are making moves in all the right directions with this new system in place, with another summer of spending now on the horizon.
