Forget Myles Lewis-Skelly, Arsenal fans are shocked by another decision Thomas Tuchel has now made

Arsenal fans are surprised by a decision Thomas Tuchel has made, and it’s not Myles Lewis-Skelly’s omission from the latest England squad.

Lewis-Skelly was left out of Tuchel’s squad for the upcoming international fixtures against Serbia and Albania.

The left-back has been on the periphery of Mikel Arteta’s squad so far this season, and this prompted the German tactician to not include him in his latest roster.

While Gunners supporters weren’t too enthused by this decision, another squad selection call that Tuchel has made has arguably enraged them more.

Arsenal fans shocked by Thomas Tuchel leaving Danny Welbeck out of England squad

Danny Welbeck has been in exceptional form for Brighton so far this season.

The striker has scored six goals already this term, more than any other English centre-forward other than Harry Kane.

This form, combined with the likes of Ollie Watkins and Dominic Solanke’s recent struggles, sparked conversation about Welbeck being handed a call-up for this break.

Many felt that the former Arsenal striker was deserving of a place in Tuchel’s squad, but the Champions League-winning coach thought otherwise.

Gunners supporters took to social media to express their disappointment over this decision.

One fan wrote on X: “No Danny Welbeck in the England squad? How rude.”

Another asked: “What does Welbeck have to do?”

One Arsenal fan posited: “Alex Scott is a cool inclusion. Lewis-Skelly is unfortunate but understandable, as is MGW [Morgan Gibbs-White]. [Phil] Foden has been looking like his old self again. Not sure what else Welbeck could have done.”

Meanwhile, one supporter of the North London club simply wrote: “No Welbeck. The game is gone.”

Danny Welbeck’s statistics 2025/26

As good as Welbeck has been this season and as romantic as it would be for the veteran forward to earn a late career recall, it’s not impossible to mount a case against it.

The number nine will turn 35 this month, and his chances of actually making the World Cup squad are relatively slim, so Tuchel is reasonable to prioritise those who may play in the competition.

Danny Welbeck’s Premier League Statistics 2025/26
Appearances (Starts)10 (7)
Goals6
Assists0
Shots per 901.86
Non-Penalty Expected Goals per 900.49
Key Passes per 901.14
Expected Assists per 900.07

On top of this, Welbeck’s underlying numbers indicate that his form may not actually be sustainable. While he’s putting up respectable expected goals numbers, he’s not putting up the volume of shots which suggests he’ll continue to score at an impressive rate, taking under two per 90 minutes.

Meanwhile, he’s offering Brighton little from a creative sense. Tuchel wants multi-faceted strikers who can play in an energetic and high-pressing style, and it’s not clear that the ageing centre-forward can do this at this stage of his career.

Arsenal fans grew fond of Welbeck during his period in North London between 2014 and 2019, but this doesn’t mean he should be in the England squad.
