Forget Real Madrid, Myles Lewis-Skelly says another game was his best performance for Arsenal

Myles Lewis-Skelly has enjoyed an exceptional breakthrough season at Arsenal.

The Hale End graduate took part in the Gunners’ pre-season tour of the United States last summer, before working his way into the first team this term due to injuries to the likes of Riccardo Calafiori and Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Making 21 Premier League appearances since his debut in the competition against Liverpool in October, the 18-year-old hasn’t looked back since being granted his first opportunity.

Now established as Arsenal’s first-choice left-back, the sky is the limit for Lewis-Skelly at the Emirates.

Myles Lewis-Skelly says the North London Derby was his best performance for Arsenal

Lewis-Skelly was outstanding against Real Madrid over both legs, dictating both games against Los Blancos from left-back.

His incredible ability to retain possession in all facets of the game was on show, while his ball-carrying through the heart of Carlo Ancelotti’s team was electric.

Lewis-Skelly followed that up with an exceptional performance against Paris Saint-Germain at the Emirates in the Champions League semi-final first leg.

However, despite these superb displays against some of Europe’s best, the teenager cited a different game as his best in senior football thus far.

Asked in an interview for Pro Direct what his best showing has been this season, the Arsenal defender said the North London Derby trumped all others.

“Good question,” he said.

“I would say the North London Derby, man. I was pumped. I’m a fan at the end of the day, I know how much it means to you guys and everyone in the stadium, so yeah, just so grateful for the opportunity.

“I just want to keep being there, man.”

Arsenal ran out 2-1 winners over their bitter rivals in January, courtesy of an own goal from Dominic Solanke and a strike from Leandro Trossard.

Boasting exceptional close control in tight spaces and an ability to turn out of trouble under pressure, Lewis-Skelly’s elite attribute at this stage of his development is ball retention.

The youngster is astoundingly good at keeping possession, which is an incredibly useful asset for a possession-oriented team.

He’s becoming increasingly adventurous with his passing, completing 4.64 progressive passes per 90, although this number is rising on a weekly basis.

The left-back is also very effective at winning fouls, using his body to draw contact and relieve pressure for his team.

Lewis-Skelly has the potential to develop into something special.
