The French media believe that William Saliba is totally over his back injury, which looked set to keep the Arsenal defender out of the World Cup.
The 24-year-old helped France to keep a clean sheet against Iraq as Les Bleus secured their spot in the World Cup Round of 32.
🏆 Which Arsenal star will go the furthest at this summer’s World Cup?
Zubimendi and Spain? Saka and England? Saliba and France?
Didier Deschamps’ team cruised past Iraq, as Kylian Mbappe’s brace and a goal from Ousmane Dembele sealed the win for France.
Following the 3-0 win in Philadelphia, the French media were full of praise for the Arsenal defender and relieved to see him over his injury struggles.
French media think William Saliba is over his back injury
The French claim that William Saliba’s performance against Iraq proved the Arsenal defender is fully over the back injury which made him a doubt for the World Cup.
Saliba came into the tournament with a back issue, but showed no signs of struggling against Iraq on Monday evening.
Saliba looked superb against Senegal in the first match and then impressed once again at the Lincoln Financial Field against Iraq.
The Arsenal completed three recoveries, three clearances, two interceptions, and won four duels in a very impressive display.
After the game, the local media in France were very impressed by the way in which Saliba has recovered from injury and started the World Cup.
- EuroSport France gave him a 6/10 and wrote: “He had a timid start to the match, struggling to keep the attackers on target before settling into a comfortable rhythm. He also displayed a lot of authority in duels, but was caught out by Al-Hamadi behind him (76th minute). A small oversight. Nothing serious.”
- FootMercato rated him 5/10: “Like Upamecano, the Gunners defender barely had to do anything, but was effective in aerial duels (28th minute). However, he was at fault for the only opposition chance of the evening.”
- L’Equipe also gave him 6/10: “A back problem? What problem? The Arsenal defender once again displayed his athletic prowess to dominate the Iraqi attackers. In duels, he was often unyielding. In the air, he reigned supreme. Despite the scoreline, he never let up, except for that one through ball to Al-Hamadi (75th minute).”
Mikel Arteta will be delighted to hear that Saliba is no longer struggling with an injury and is looking back to his best.
Arsenal cannot afford for the French defender to head into the start of next season struggling with any injury issues.
