Arsenal icon Martin Keown threatened to leave the talkSPORT studio live on air after Jim White claimed he is ‘in denial’ over Anthony Gordon’s goal for Newcastle United.
Debate continues to bubble away since Gordon scored a highly controversial winning effort for Newcastle against Arsenal. The 22-year-old dealt the Gunners their first and only defeat in the Premier League this season after his decisive goal survived several checks by the VAR.
Andy Madley reviewed all available footage before informing on-field referee Stuart Attwell to stick with the original decision. The cameras installed at St James’ Park could not show if the ball had left the pitch before Joe Willock’s cross or if Gordon was later in an onside position.

Debate continues over Gordon’s controversial goal for Newcastle vs Arsenal
Willock whipped his delivery into the Arsenal area after the ball crept along the byline in the closing stages. Joelinton rose at the rear post to challenge Gabriel Magalhaes for the ball, as well. But the Brazilian also pushed his compatriot in the back of the neck to leverage himself.
Madley nor Attwell felt Joelinton fouled Gabriel, who likely would have won the ball without being pushed. The ball also struck Joelinton on the arm before it reached Gordon, who may have been offside. Madley did not have a camera angle that showed the position of the ball.

The controversial goal Gordon scored for Newcastle to beat Arsenal has sparked widespread debate since. Gunners coach Mikel Arteta also called the goal standing ‘embarrassing’ and a ‘disgrace’. While Arsenal released a statement criticising ‘yet more unacceptable refereeing’.
White enrages Gunners great Keown live on talkSPORT over Gordon’s winner
Debate continues over the goal, as well, with Keown now clashing with talkSPORT presenter White live on air. The Arsenal legend and former Sky Sports News presenter clashed over if the goal should have stood after the Premier League charged Arteta for his post-game claim.
The argument erupted on talkSPORT after Keown noted how the officials did not feel Erling Haaland fouled Marc Cucurella when Manchester City drew at Chelsea and also did not see Joelinton pushing Gabriel before Gordon’s goal for Newcastle as a foul on the Arsenal brute.
“In this instance, a former participant should [know],” Keown explained. “I thought Jamie Carragher was brilliant on this. The other night, he saw a similar incident where Cucurella was fouled. He was actually dragged by Haaland on the wrong side of play.”
But as former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan noted how Gary Neville sided with the call at Newcastle, White added: “If this wasn’t Arsenal, you wouldn’t be saying this.” White then added that the Gunners icon is ‘in denial’ as Keown referenced back to the Haaland incident.
To which, Keown – now clearly frustrated – responded: “Do you want me to do what Martin O’Neill said? ‘I’m going to leave the studio’. Do you want me to do that?”
On-field referee Anthony Taylor gave Manchester City a penalty at Chelsea after the incident between Haaland and Cucurella. VAR Jarred Gillett did not advise him to overturn the call at Stamford Bridge, either, despite a lengthy check. Both players were pulling each other down.
