Gabby Agbonlahor says Bukayo Saka has ‘underachieved’, but new Arsenal contract signals trophy intent

Bukayo Saka has underachieved on the trophy front in the eyes of Gabby Agbonlahor, but the winger’s new Arsenal contract signals change.

Saka has signed a new contract at Arsenal, extending his stay at his boyhood club by five years.

It’s tremendous news for the Gunners, who have relished watching Saka’s growth from the academy to become the poster boy of Mikel Arteta’s project.

Saka will become Arsenal’s highest-paid player, in what is a deserved reward for a player of his calibre; however, there is one department that the forward will seek improvement in.

Is there any current player you love more than Bukayo Saka, if yes, who and why?

Gabby Agbonlahor thinks Bukayo Saka’s new contract signals more trophies for Arsenal

With 156 goal contributions in 296 appearances for Arsenal, Saka is well on his way to becoming a club legend.

There is, however, one thing that separates the 24-year-old from other Arsenal legends, and that is his personal trophy collection.

Since his Arsenal debut in 2018, Saka has only won one major trophy: the FA Cup in 2020.

It’s why Gabby Agbonlahor has just claimed that Saka has, thus far, ‘underachieved’ at Arsenal.

“Do you question the new deal signing? Is he super confident Arsenal win trophies this season? I think they are going to,” Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT.

“I think they could win up to three trophies this season, but winning one FA Cup in how many games? 217 Premier League appearances, Champions League, he’s played 24 appearances. And you look at that, not been close to winning a title.”

Agree or disagree: Bukayo Saka has underachieved at Arsenal

The Aston Villa icon noted his belief that Arsenal are ‘going to win’ the Premier League this season, as well as having chances in the three other competitions.

The fact remains that nothing has been won yet, but Agbonlahor thinks Saka’s new deal represents a possible trigger of change.

“He’s underachieved,” Agbonlahor claimed, “but now he probably looks at where Arsenal are now, and he’s going to top up those trophies.”

Saka’s new deal signals his belief that being at Arsenal is the best place to be to win major titles, which says everything that needs to be known about the objectives behind the scenes of Arteta’s project.

Arsenal’s new contracts show major title intent

It’s one thing tying Saka down to a new deal, given his love for Arsenal, but another to keep the likes of Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba at the club.

In the past year, both Gabriel and Saliba have committed their futures to the Gunners, despite understanding that, essentially, interest would be rife if they were to get cold feet.

Fill in the blank: Andrea Berta must renew ____________’s contract next!

Bukayo Saka – 2027

Gabriel Martinelli – 2027

Leandro Trossard – 2027

Gabriel Jesus – 2027

Declan Rice – 2028 (Option for 2029)

Martin Odegaard – 2028

Kai Havertz – 2028

David Raya – 2028

Saliba’s snub of Real Madrid was so telling, as in a real rarity, a player nearing his prime envisions more success at Arsenal than with Los Blancos.

It’s all very positive, but trophies need to be delivered to keep such players hungry, Saka included.

For now, the new deals will be celebrated and hopefully will be polished with silverware in the summer.
