Arsenal legend Gilberto Silva has given his verdict on if the Gunners can win the Premier League with the north London side sat top of the standings.

Mikel Arteta’s men have been outstanding in recent weeks in the English top-flight, with Arsenal currently on an eight-game winning run and leading the Premier League over Manchester City and Liverpool.

With Arsenal facing Pep Guardiola’s side next, though, there’s a real chance that the wheels could come off in the Gunners’ bid to become Premier League champions for the first time in 20 years.

And speaking to CaughtOffside, former Brazilian international Gilberto was asked if he believed Arsenal had what it takes to become champions, with the Invincible believing the Gunners can get the job done.

Indeed, the fixture list might not be kind to Arsenal, but the north London side have hit form at the right time this season, and silverware could be on the cards in the coming weeks.

Gilberto said when asked if Arsenal can win the Premier League: “It won’t be easy, but I do think Arsenal can win the Premier League. Last year they came so close. I was very sad for them.

“I know what it’s like to come close to success then lose. I had it in the 2006 Champions League Final. Arsenal has a very good team right now, and there is a hunger to win.

“When I speak to Edu that’s always clear. So now they need a big effort because it’s not going to be easy to finish above Liverpool and Manchester City.”

Arsenal are arguably in a better position to win the league this season compared to last year due to the fact that their form this time around is simply unprecedented.

Eight wins on the bounce is something few fans would have predicted this season, and Arsenal need to believe that they have what it takes to win the Premier League in the next few weeks.

Whilst upcoming games against City, Tottenham and Manchester United will be hard, Arsenal’s form and lack of injuries puts the north London side in an ideal position to succeed, with 20 years far too long between Premier League titles.
