Former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil announced his retirement from football today, and Kevin De Bruyne and Olivier Giroud both reacted using one word.
The German joined the Gunners all the way back in 2013 for a then-club-record fee. He was our first big signing of the Emirates era, and he brought us a lot of joy.
After a spectacular career at the top level at clubs like Real Madrid and Arsenal, Ozil decided to hang his boots up today.

Mesut Ozil is one of the greatest attacking midfielders of our generation.
The German’s vision was second to none and his creative numbers during his prime were simply mindblowing, even when you compare him to the greatest names in football.
Ozil has been an inspiration to numerous other attacking midfielders over the years. Many have tried to replicate his game, but very few have succeeded, which shows just how special a player he was.
After he confirmed his retirement this afternoon, Ozil received a ton of love from his former teammates and colleagues on Instagram and Twitter.
Giroud and De Bruyne both decided that just one word is enough to describe Ozil – ‘legend!”
The Frenchman posted an Instagram story for Ozil after hearing the news, while De Bruyne replied to the German’s post on Twitter earlier today.

Ozil’s time at Arsenal came to a very sad end.
The German lost his place in the side due to issues with Mikel Arteta behind the scenes, and the Gunners boss decided to push him out of the door. Ozil left Arsenal after seven and a half years in January 2021.
It’s a shame what happened in the end, but Ozil’s legacy at Arsenal will not be forgotten. He is one of the greatest players to play for us in the Emirates era, and he played a big part in ending our trophy drought in his debut season.
