The only way Mikel Arteta would not be Arsenal manager next season is if he decided to walk away from the club.

The Gunners are at risk of ending the season trophyless again after losing to Manchester City and having their lead at the top of the Premier League table cut significantly.

Arteta’s team are still going strong in the Champions League, but face a tough battle against Atletico Madrid and then either Bayern Munich or PSG in the final.

However, regardless of whether they finish the season with silverware or not, it seems Arteta will be given the power to decide his own future.

Arsenal are unlikely to sack Mikel Arteta

Arsenal are unlikely to sack Mikel Arteta in the summer regardless of how they end the season, according to Sami Mokbel.

Right now, the North London club’s ownership remains firmly behind the manager and have no plans to remove him at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Danny Murphy claims that talk of Arteta being sacked is crazy, given how far he has taken the club.

The former Premier League midfielder thinks the Spanish boss has done a remarkable job to have the Gunners challenging on all fronts.

Asked whether Arsenal are ‘bottling it’, Murphy told BBC MOTD: “I understand success is based on trophies, but let’s say Arteta lost the Premier League on goal difference and lost in the Champions League final. You’ve got to give him some respect here; he’s there or thereabouts.

“They’re getting better and better and closer and closer. I know it’s been a couple of years of finishing second, but the squad is as good as it’s ever been.

“This talk is that if he doesn’t win anything, he should go… I think it’s crazy.”

When asked about Arteta’s future, Mokbel added: “I think the only way Mikel Arteta is not Arsenal manager next season is if he makes the call because the club and ownership are 100% behind him because of the reasons Danny just mentioned.

“You have to understand where Arsenal were when he took over, and where they are now. I think we can all accept that they’re probably one of the, if not the, most exciting footballing projects in European football.”

Arteta and Arsenal paused new contract talks until the end of the season, and it will be fascinating to see the Gunners’ next steps if they were to go trophyless again.
