By losing to West Ham at the Emirates, Arsenal were unable to capitalise on Liverpool’s draw with Aston Villa.

Just as the Gunners spotted a gap to exploit in the Premier League title race, Arsenal shot themselves in the foot by dropping points.

No lessons were learned after Mikel Arteta’s side lost to West Ham at the Emirates in 2023/24, with the Hammers handing Arsenal yet another blow in the title race.

Liverpool lead the way with a seven-point lead which with 12 games to go, will be incredibly difficult to catch.

Opta hands Arsenal a massive blow in the Premier League title race

Arteta was furious with the West Ham result as Arsenal were far from at the level expected from a side challenging for the league title.

Losing to the Hammers was not on the cards ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Manchester City, with the Super Sunday fixture now of far lesser interest to the Gunners.

That is because, after Arsenal’s defeat to West Ham, a supercomputer simulated how the end of the season would end, seeing Arteta’s title chances take a resounding hit.

Opta noted that Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League this season dropped by a remarkable 51.1% after losing to West Ham.

Before the action, Arsenal had a 15.2% chance of winning the league, which has since dropped to 7.4%.

It appears that the league is already in Liverpool’s hands, with Arne Slot’s squad having a 92.5% chance of winning the title before even kicking the ball against Man City.

Mathematically, the race is not over given that Arsenal still have to go to Anfield to face Liverpool but, history will tell you that the Gunners will struggle to catch up now.

Liverpool and Arsenal’s fixtures in Premier League title run-in

Paul Merson doesn’t think Arsenal can win the Premier League after the result against West Ham, which is what the supercomputer and many other fans are thinking.

It will be a long way back for the Gunners now, which is a dire shame given how different things could’ve been had Arteta been backed in the summer and the winter transfer windows.

Mathematically, Arsenal can still win the league, with points to be won and dropped before May.

As seen above, Liverpool have some testing fixtures coming up, making the defeat to West Ham all the more frustrating.

Arsenal are also set to be tested in the run-in, with a greater level of performance needed if the Gunners are to keep pushing Liverpool along the way.
