Any club would pay significant money if an unbeaten Premier League season was possible, but what could the price possibly be?

Arsenal are the only Premier League club to go a full league season unbeaten, completing the feat in the 2003/04 campaign.

Arsene Wenger’s Invincibles will be forever remembered in football history, standing out above the rest as teams try, and fail, to replicate the success.

Wenger built the majority of the Invincibles squad, having some help from Bruce Rioch with regard to some players he inherited, including Dennis Bergkamp

How much the Arsenal Invincibles starting XI would cost now

To go a whole Premier League season undefeated is remarkable, with the achievement looking more difficult to repeat year after year.

The Premier League is one of the world’s most competitive leagues, explaining why it’s near-impossible to go a whole campaign without losing but, Wenger found a way.

The former Arsenal manager built a squad packed with both talent and an unbreakable mentality, with the Gunners ensuring they ended the season unbeaten even after being confirmed champions.

With the talent that Manchester City and Liverpool have showcased over the years, it bares the question of just how much would it cost to build an unbreakable XI.

Thanks to data obtained by Sky Sports, we can now estimate a figure, as a metric determining inflated transfer fees has emerged.

Piecing together the fee that Arsenal paid for each of the Invincibles’ most used starting XI reveals a total cost of just £45.1m, not even half of the price of Enzo Fernandez in today’s market.

Sky Sports’ data reveals an eye-watering £359.6m difference in prices at the time and prices after inflation, with the cost of the Invincibles starting XI today being in the region of £404.7m.

Given that one player can be purchased for over the £100m mark nowadays, building an unbeaten XI for £404.7m could still be considered quite the bargain.

Most notable price hikes in Arsenal Invincibles squad

Out of the starting XI, the fees of Sol Campbell (free transfer) and Ashley Cole (academy product) were not counted, meaning the nine-figure fee is generated by nine names.

Of the nine names who saw their transfer fee inflate, four had their prices hike by ten per cent or more.

Patrick Vieira£4m£47.4m
Freddie Ljungberg£3.1m£30.4m
Thierry Henry£10.6m£103.7m
Dennis Bergkamp£7.5m£79.6m

Patrick Vieira and Freddie Ljungberg saw their value soar, along with the less surprising duo of Bergkamp and Thierry Henry.

Henry and Bergkamp alone make up £183.3m of the total inflated cost of the XI, which will come as little shock factor.

Wenger did exceptionally well to acquire his squad for less than £50m, emphasising just how difficult it is to create a perfect XI in today’s climate.
