Just as Arsenal were celebrating a wonderful victory over Leicester City on Sunday, news broke out about Barcelona’s interest in Mikel Arteta.

Spanish outlet RAC1 revealed that soon-to-be Barca president Joan Laporta has the Arsenal boss in mind for the Camp Nou hot seat if Ronald Koeman, who was appointed by the former regime, decided to leave.

That was a shock to everyone. We all know Arteta has the potential to become one of the best coaches in the world, but the fact that Barcelona want him now after just over a year at Arsenal surprised many.

The Spaniard is the key man for us at the moment. It’s his project that it taking shape and him leaving midway would be a humongous blow for us – both on and off the field.

Thankfully, it looks like Barca’s new regime are looking to back Koeman for the forseeable future. Rafa Yuste, a senior member in Laporta’s camp, admitted that Arteta is a great coach, but denied any interest in him.

He said, as per Mundo Deportivo: “I flatly deny it. I know that Mikel Arteta is a great coach, a friend of Pep (Guardiola), but I have not spoken with him. And we convey all our confidence in Koeman.”

Arsenal Insider’s view:

A part of Barcelona’s academy when he was a kid, it wouldn’t surprise people if Arteta would fancy the Barca somewhere down the line in his managerial career. However, now’s not the time.

The Spaniard, despite what our league position says, is doing a brilliant job at the Emirates. He has improved Arsenal a lot since he took over and there is a good chance we will achieve our ambitions for the season through the Europa League.

Most Arsenal fans will surely be glad that the rumours have been rubbished. There is no doubt that Arteta will leave us one day, but it won’t happen any time soon, and that is the best thing for all parties.
